Every year the major endocrine and diabetes organizations publish their diabetes guidelines. These are very comprehensive, usually lengthy articles covering every imaginable aspect of taking care of the diabetic patient. The editor of Practical Diabetology asked me to write a more concise opinion about all of the therapies that we have at our disposal for the patient with type 2 diabetes. As the title of the journal says, this is meant as a practical guide to using the multitude of drugs to optimize your diabetes treatments and individualize your approach for your patients. I have reviewed each class, discussed the reasons why you would choose one over the other and when. While the intended audience is the healthcare practitioner, I think that patients with diabetes and their caregivers will find value in this review.
